Creative Catharsis

Cuban artist Dashel Hernandez believes that art can heal the collective wounds of his displaced generation. His nostalgic mixed-media pieces hint at a complicated childhood after the collapse of the Soviet Union, when he was forced to rebuild his worldview and deal with the fact that he had been lied to for most of his life. Now, Hernandez hopes to encourage fellow Cubans who came of age after the Cold War to embrace a peaceful acceptance of their past.
