Born in Afghanistan, Shakiba married her husband at the age of 11. Ten years later after having endured daily beatings, she found out she was pregnant. She considered abortion, but her husband threatened to kill her. Shakiba and her now five children have sought refuge five times since—in Pakistan, Iran, India, Turkey, and finally in the U.S. Each time she has had to learn a new language, adapt to a different way of living and find a way to thrive. This is the first iteration of a visual presentation of her struggle and current state of mind.
