As someone who is non-binary, I constantly experience microaggressions from people who don’t understand, or don’t want to understand, the concept of being other than man or woman. Not only must I confront others’ assumptions, but I’m forced to deal with my own expectations of physical standards. My exterior does not always match my demeanor, and sometimes it does. Through these self-portraits, I display my identity: neither man nor woman.

College became my safe-haven, I could dress and behave the way I wanted. I took classes that allowed me to understand gender. I surrounded myself around people that had similar experiences.

My earliest memory dates to being two years old. I don’t remember much: all I remember is having a crush on my cousin, Fanny, and people calling me a “cute girl.”

In high school, I identified as gender-fluid through the help of social media. I was always labeled as a “tomboy,” but I knew this was an incorrect term.

I’ve always wanted to remove my chest. At the age of 10 I realized it was possible to get top surgery and then I learning about binders for temporary use.

At the age of 5, I swore I was a boy with an undeveloped penis. I would avoid mirrors because I was convinced the image reflected was wrong.
