Here we are at the start of #TFW15 just before Thursday night’s Fall Workshop kickoff. Photo by @nikonusa’s Chad McNeeley.
Thanks to everyone who made #TFW15 a rousing success. The 72 hours was packed with learning, improvement and many, many accomplishments. All students and coaches should feel proud of what they were able to develop and produce in such a short period.
Several students were recognized for their efforts:
Michel duCille Award – Commitment in storytelling: Kenneth Holston “Can’t Afford Pride”
Northern Short Course in Photojournalism & National Press Photographers Association Award – A-Z award (showing growth): Gabriella Jones “Redeeming Evan"
Nikon Award – Best in Show: Yu Hua “Leo”
THINK TANK PHOTO Award – Overcoming the Odds: Jodi Martinez “Fit Over Fifty”
THINK TANK PHOTO Award – Most Innovative: Amanda Piela “Flawless"
MPJ Award – Most Notable: Dave Salanitri “Growing Men”
The Fall Workshop wouldn’t have been possible without incredible sponsors including Nikon, Apple Inc., National Geographic, THINK TANK PHOTO, Syracuse University Bookstore and Northern Short Course in Photojournalism, plus the faculty, staff and Dean Lorraine Branham at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University.
A website with the final projects will be available in a few weeks, so stay connected with #TFW15 here or through our Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr accounts all linked atop the page here:

After getting some rest, I was able to reflect on the great experience the @thefallworkshop was.
I’ll start off by saying that it was the best journalism experience I’ve ever had. I was able to tell a teenager’s story who survived liver cancer. It was a delicate story that would not have been told without his family accepting me into their home, making me part of their family, and trusting me with their story.
Professor @bruce_strong always talks about how while telling these stories, we invest our time and part of our lives to the story. Now I understand what it means. As journalists, we are making invaluable connections when we spend time with these people, and its a beautiful thing this profession allows.
The workshop was an inspiring event. Not only because of the speakers, but because of my coaches and peers. To see everyone working so hard on their stories, not getting any sleep, and all while being happy was incredible. I must thank both my coaches @michellemcloughlin and @sgitner for their help. They were both constantly checking that my project was going as planned, and Professor Gitner was with us until 3 in the morning making sure our pieces were coming together. To see coaches and Professors so invested in their students is inspiring.
I am grateful for the workshop and the opportunity it presents, and I cannot wait until next years even if I know that I will only get 1 hour asleep during it. #tfw15

It’s a wrap!!! Thank you so much to everyone (coaches, teachers, sponsors, staff, story subjects, fiancés named @jessesquinn who brought coffee and shuttled sleepy workshop attendants to and from campus…) and especially @miatramz and Greg Heisler, the coaches of team number one!! Here’s the team all together (but missing Jon Spencer!) after the community show! 📷: @a.erlebacher #tfw15 (at S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications)

Man, what a weekend. Melissa Farlow, pictured here, has 20+ picture stories in National Geographic and was my coach for the Fall Workshop here in Syracuse. I learned an incredible amount from here and my other mentor, Andrew Maclean, which resulted in winning Best in Show in my class. Also pictured here in Chase Guttman, who will one day soon be a household name for his great photo work. #hardwork #mentorship #photo #photojournalism #TFW15 #nikon #nps (at S. I.
